Job Description

Rocksteady is looking for an Advanced Character Artist to join our dedicated and collaborative team working on our upcoming title Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and beyond. 
 
A well-rounded Character Artist will find success in this role, especially an individual who is exceptionally passionate about the artistry and craft in making faces to a high degree of fidelity. Whether it’s modelling, stylisation, texturing, materials, blend shapes, wrinkle maps…you will help us maintain high artistic standards in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. 

You will be collaborating with our Technical and Animation teams to ensure our characters look great during both cinematics and gameplay, and that their expressions are as iconic as the characters themselves.  

This role also involves crafting realistic and detailed characters from concept art, whether they are creatures, any form of outfit or mechanical robots; you understand the ins and outs of both organic and non-organic surfaces. For example, you know how to make skin look ‘fleshy’, how to model and texture different types of cloth, and are proficient at modelling hard surface assets, all while meeting the polygon budgets.   

This position is hybrid, and requires a minimum of one day per week at our office in Kentish Town, London.  

Your Role Accountabilities… 
  • Create high quality 3D character assets that match the game’s aesthetic 
  • Ensure that assets meet technical and performance requirements while maintaining visual excellence 
  • Work closely with the Character Lead and Art Director to understand and execute the artistic vision for the game 
  • Make high quality faces that match the style of the game and the role of the character, working with scans or from scratch 
  • Work closely with the Animation and Technical departments to achieve world class facial performances 
  • Actively share knowledge and influence the team and related disciplines 
  • Be an active participant in internal and external art teams discussions, critiques and reviews
Qualifications & Experience…  
  • Experienced in making realistic characters for videogames, showing an advanced understanding of facial and body anatomy, cloth, and hard surface artistry  
  • Having worked with a pipeline that involves head scanning  
  • Understanding of facial structure and facial animation , and experience collaborating with animators to iterate a character 
  • Professional knowledge of Marvelous Designer, Zbrush, Max/Maya, Substance Painter or equivalent DCC tools into a complex game production 
  • Experience working in Unreal 4 based productions  
  • Proficiency with texturing, in a Physically Based Rendering (PBR) material workflow 
  • Experience making characters targeted towards Unreal Engine 5 is an advantage
  • Experience with a Material Layering based pipeline is a bonus
  • Interest in materials, character art tools and a technical mindset  is preferred
  • Interest in Technical Animation, with a good understanding of deformation and simulation is advantageous
